SynopsisEdit

The crew relaxes in the Oasis Bar, watching some local gangsters partake in typical gangster activity. Telemachus Rhade is eying the luscious gang leader when they hear the thunderous scream of a spaceship bearing down on the street outside. After smashing gracelessly into the dirt and skidding to a halt, the ramp lowers and none other than Flavin steps onto the dusty street. Dylan Hunt and Rhade greet him incredulously, having long since written him off as a goner. The gangsters Lunah and Bozim set their greedy sights on the ship but Dylan heads them off, disarming them both before locking the ship and retiring to the bar with the new arrival. Flavin tells them that the surviving Paradine had sent him back as a mentor for Dylan. They turn to Beka Valentine for transportation. While they are preparing to leave, Lunah and Bozim are still prowling around the ship and find two small orbs that Flavin dropped. They bear the same marks as the aircraft and Lunah inserts hers into its designated hole. Bozim doesn’t believe she’ll give him his fair cut of whatever is inside so their two groups split off. When Lunah and her crew stomp off to the bar, Rhade muses at Bozim’s thick-headed bunch and comes up with a devilish plan. He walks into the bar and strikes a deal with Lunah to get the other key; they follow him outside where he demonstrates his good intentions by beating the daylights out of Bozim’s men. He then negotiates his price with Lunah as well as one third of the ship’s cargo and the two find a private booth where they seal the deal. When she thinks he’s asleep, she sneaks out and Rhade hears her tell her cronies of her plan to kill him once she has the other key.

Dylan, Flavin, and Beka travel in the Eureka Maru when two of Lunah’s ships approach and begin firing. One flies in much too close and explodes against the Maru’s hull, crippling the ship and sending them into a dive towards the surface. They land hard but in one piece, close to Dylan’s long lost childhood home. The place is key to Dylan and his status as a Paradine because it symbolizes his greatest losses that in turn drive him towards his greatest achievements. But Flavin tells him he must be satisfied with life as it comes and not force every loss into a gain or it will trap him. The paradox of the Paradine is that the sooner he accepts that some things just are, the sooner he will understand his powers, which will allow him to travel to a time before his loss.

Rhade walks into Bozim’s camp with Lunah and her gang right behind him. When he has everyone’s attention, he throws the money Lunah paid him into the street and demands that Bozim double it for his loyalty or else. Bozim is delighted and agrees immediately while Lunah fumes in the street. Both sides want a fight but Lunah is outmanned and retreats to the bar where Doyle is waiting with a proposal. She knows Lunah could use some hired muscle and flexes some of her own by beating the biggest thug she sees before going outside where she stomps Bozim’s men into the ground.

Beka has parked the Maru outside a Vedran burial ground and waits as Dylan and Flavin walk inside. They stop in front of two name plates that Dylan is surprised to see are his parent’s. He thought neither of his parents were true Vedrans and learns that his father was a Paradine, an evolved Vedran. But this revelation only frustrates Dylan more. More secrets and more riddles have cost him his temper and he leaves the room in a huff. He marches to the tunnel entrance and doesn’t find it, realizing he isn’t where or when he thought he was. He finally relaxes and lets the test take him where it will. They reach the cave mouth but in Beka’s place is the grand city of Tarn-Vedra, three hundred years in the past, stretching out beneath them. The image vanishes and Flavin defines the test laid out for Dylan. His existence as a Paradine is not static; he can be in several places and times at once. When Trance Gemini moved them all through the Route of Ages to save them, she couldn’t determine when in time they would emerge. They are in the past, before the battle to save the Commonwealth. It is now Dylan’s job to learn how to move at will through time and space, mastering the abilities handed down to him.

Rhade and Doyle have worked both their employers into a paranoid frenzy; always keeping each off balance by threatening to switch to the highest bidder and leaving the other weakened. Both sides erupt into a firefight in the street. Rhade and Doyle wisely stand aside during the battle while Harper, who has been the liaison between the two schemers, sneaks the keys from both their hiding spots. Rhade and Doyle each report that their counterpart may be too strong for them and the two sides will have to come to an agreement or no one will get the ship’s bounty. When they meet at the ship and insert both keys, the door doesn’t open and each gang’s fury dissolves into another vicious fight.

Beka leaves Flavin and Dylan on the Andromeda Ascendant and takes the Maru to search for power cells. Harper is on the comm. pleading for help from the violent situation on Seefra. Dylan has no way to reach him with Beka gone but Flavin steps in to give him his final lesson. Trance Gemini and Flavin both focus their energy as Dylan concentrates and the three dissolve into a glowing ball of light.

As Lunah, Bozim and their crews continue to fight each other, the door to Flavin's ship suddenly opens, and everyone is shocked as Dylan steps out. Lunah and Bozim both raise their weapons but he shoots them down before they get a shot. The crew's mind is boggled at Dylan's appearance but he offers no explanation. Later that night, Trance and Dylan talk in the bar as she helps him come to terms with his new responsibility. As strange as it is to him, he begins to accept the Paradine viewpoint that some things just are and there’s no fighting it.

Memorable QuotesEdit

Rhade: You seen them fly? Maniacs.

Harper: Ok. Does it have anything, anything at all to do with us getting outta here?
Flavin: Yes.
Harper: Yes. I knew this was our lucky day.
Flavin: And no.
Harper: I knew we were screwed.

Dylan: First thing's first. You left here in a slipfighter.
Flavin: Big mistake trading that ship.
Dylan: No kidding, that one has landing problems.

Harper: (thinking he's gonna die soon) See you in the next life. (raises his glass and then cuts communications).
Andromeda: Harper terminated.
Dylan: Bad choice of words.

Beka: (after Dylan unexpectedly steps out of Flavin's ship) Well this is a surprise.
