Cobalt is a metal that has thousands of technological applications ranging from salted weapons and medical treatments. However, its most notable usage is that it is a critical material needed to make Carbon Nanotubes, which are used to build buckyballs, Carbon Nanofibers, space elevators, and generally has a place in all nanotechnologies. In the Systems Commonwealth, it is valuable enough to be stolen and smuggled in bulk amounts. The way that the Andromeda Ascendant and the Systems Commonwealth found that the Templars were building a Time Bridge was by tracking large smuggled shipments of stolen Cobalt and Nickel.
