SynopsisEdit

Seamus Harper monitors the production of exotic matter while Dylan works within the porthole. A sudden explosion flings Dylan Hunt back through the door, his hand covered in toxic slime. He is incoherent and passes out as Harper calls for help. As Dylan drifts in and out of consciousness, he sees his crew working frantically over him. Before blackness overtakes him, he notices the exotic matter containment warning tick a notch deeper into the red.

He wakes suddenly in Harper’s bar, screaming about the exotic matter but Telemachus Rhade calms him, telling him they handled that a week ago. Dylan has no recollection of this but his thoughts are interrupted by a man named Elysian who enters the bar carrying Dylan’s Force lance. He fires it, rendering everyone in the room unconscious but Dylan, the weapon’s primary user. When he has his desired privacy, Elysian gives Dylan the message, “Evas ar fees. See u cave.” Complete gibberish to Dylan who promptly disarms the intruder but before he gets any answers, Elysian passes out. Rhade is suddenly behind Dylan and stabs him in the chest with his bone blades. As Dylan’s vision blurs, he sees Elysian rise and tell him he is there to help Dylan die, and die again in the next life until he deciphers the riddle. He is suddenly in Harper’s lab again, seeing the exotic matter gage drift further into the red.

He wakes on the med deck with Trance Gemini standing over him. He jumps out of bed, remembering Rhade stabbing him but Trance calms him. She tells him they had to operate because of his exposure to the toxic matter. They opened his chest while he was wide awake for anaesthesia would have killed him. The procedure was so traumatic they performed a mind wipe to spare him the brutal memory. The wipe has left gaps in his memory but she fills one. She tells him they were unable to contain the matter and a few thousand evacuees were killed and a transport ship was destroyed. When he searches the ship’s archives for any mention of Elysian’s riddle, he collapses, finding himself once again with the crew over him and the matter gage steadily rising.

He comes to with Trance and Beka Valentine standing by. Beka is wearing nietsczean clothes and boneblades. Harper rolls in a machine to reverse the mind wipe, as it seems to be the only way for Dylan to regain his composure. Trance tells him not to fall asleep during the procedure and calls in their expert. When Elysian walks through the door, Dylan’s panics and struggles to get up. He tries telling them who he is but they all share embarrassed glances. Elysian behaves perfectly innocent until he leans in to begin the procedure and whispers the same riddle into Dylan’s ear. Dylan shudders and falls still, seeing the gage fall into the critical level.

This time he wakes in a cramped cell to find Doyle sitting motionless in the corner, cobwebbed and dusty. She animates when she sees him, telling him they arrived through a tesseract field when they were ambushed on Seefra-6 almost 100 years ago. Bread and water tesseract in after a few days and Dylan ponders Elysian’s riddle as he eats. They discuss the last thing he remembers, the exotic matter overload, and she tells him shutting it down after maximum containment would be catastrophic. He suddenly goes into fits and after another blurry episode with the containment warning, he again wakes in the cell. As Doyle helps him drink water he has a sudden idea. The tesseract field is too small to take in reverse, but using the water’s reflection will widen it enough for them to pass through. The risk of death is of little concern to Dylan as they lie on the floor and wait. When the field finally appears, they are both swallowed up and vanish.

Dylan finds himself on a table next to Rhade, but Gaheris Rhade not Telemachus. The Commonwealth is at the height of its power with a fleet of warships and slipfighters behind the Andromeda. They have just returned from a covert mission, for which they both received a mind wipe. Dylan receives his biggest shock when his wife comes to see him, and she looks like Doyle, though her name is Sara Riley. It is the last emotional straw for him; and for her too. She claims he always behaves this way after a wipe and she cannot take it anymore. She tells Dylan that she quit the service to raise their two sons and so he could continue on as captain. When she demands to know if he loves her and if she’s thrown her life away for nothing, he has no answer. He gains only marginal relief when he finds himself in between worlds. He sits in a bright room opposite Elysian, who explains he is a race unto himself and exists in all universes. He has been watching Dylan drift through alternate realities, further away from his body and ultimate rescue. Elysian tells Dylan he can choose his path and his ultimate destination. Dylan decides to go back to Gaheris and "Sara," and tells her that he loves her. Just then, Gaheris comes in saying they've got trouble. Elysian then walks in, flanked by troops, and accuses Dylan and Gaheris of treason. Dylan draws his force lance on Elysian, who steps forward. Elysian looks Dylan in the eyes and tells him in an undertone that there is nothing for him in this reality. Suddenly Dylan finds himself on the bridge of the Andromeda, which frustrates him greatly.

Elysian tells Dylan that he can guide him back but Dylan holds the key; he must decipher the riddle. Just as frustration is getting the better of him, his mind clicks and it becomes clear. He speaks the riddle backwards. Evas are fees becomes "Save Seefra." See you cave becomes "Evacuees." "Save Seefra evacuees", the evacuees aboard Andromeda that are in danger if the excess exotic matter is not vented. He sees Elysian smiling at him and he begins to scream at the top of his voice.

His shout turns to Rhade’s, who is standing over him, shouting at him to stay awake. A drainage tube sticks out of his chest as Trance cauterises the incision. Dylan jumps up from the makeshift operating table and runs to the console where he informs Harper of the containment emergency. Harper is shocked as the alarm never sounded and he reaches to shut it down but Dylan stops him. He calls for the Andromeda Ascendant Artificial Intelligence to align the Ramscoop and vacuum the excess matter. There is a massive explosion and the lights flicker but the ship and human cargo remain unharmed. All systems come back online, including Slipstream, something they have all waited a long time to hear. With the catastrophe averted, Dylan has a moment to realize his state and promptly passes out. He wakes in bed to Doyle bringing him tea. Outside he hears Rhade welcome the captain of the transport that held the evacuees. Dylan’s world swims around him as Elysian steps through the door to thank him.
